Fablab

A FabLab is a local, community workshop that provides access to digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills and electronics workstations. Originating from MIT, the concept emphasizes experimental design, rapid prototyping and open knowledge sharing within a maker community. FabLabs combine hands-on fabrication skills (cutting, printing, soldering) with design software and encourage iteration, documentation and collaboration among students, designers and small-scale innovators.

As a maker student you use the FabLab to build a prototype wearable sensor enclosure: you design the parts in CAD, print complex shapes on the 3D printer and cut precise openings with the laser cutter. Then you use the soldering station and measurement tools in the lab to install the electronics and test the assembly. Throughout the process you receive feedback from other users, document your design files and can produce multiple iterations quickly without owning expensive equipment yourself.
